In general, the Mangiring Ulos is traditionally worn as a shoulder cloth or shawl (sengka-sengka). Beyond its everyday use, it also holds deep cultural and ceremonial significance.

In Batak funeral ceremonies, the Mangiring Ulos is used in the mangulosi tradition (the ceremonial presentation of an ulos) for children who have passed away. It is also presented during a newborn's naming ceremony as an Ulos Parompa (baby-carrying ulos). According to Batak tradition, this ulos symbolizes prayers and blessings for the child's healthy growth—from infancy until they begin to walk—and expresses the hope that the family will be blessed with future descendants.
