TOBATENUN

Tobatenun is a social enterprise dedicated to the preservation, revitalisation, and innovation of Batak handwoven textiles from the Lake Toba region in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This initiative carries a vision to protect cultural heritage while fostering sustainable futures. By adopting a social enterprise model, Tobatenun balances cultural preservation with economic empowerment— ensuring that weaving is not only valued as heritage, but also recognised as a meaningful source of livelihood. Established in 2018, Tobatenun builds strong and enduring ties with Tenun artisans, ensuring that traditional skills continue to flourish across generations. Through training programmes, design innovation, and fair-trade practices, Tobatenun not only strengthens the weaving community but also introduces Batak textiles to wider audiences, both nationally and internationally.
