Rumah Kreatif Sekomandi

Textiles Sulawesi Barat
Sekomandi Weaving is an ancestral cultural heritage of the Kalumpang community in Mamuju, West Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is believed to be one of the oldest weaving traditions in the world, with a history spanning approximately 480 years. Rumah Kreatif Sekomandi is located across Hinua Village in Bonehau District, as well as Karatun Village and Kondo Bulo Village in Kalumpang District.

Rumah Kreatif Sekomandi consists of 10 skilled artisans led by Grace, who are dedicated to preserving and promoting this unique cultural heritage. The production process of Sekomandi Ikat Weaving is distinctive and highly time-intensive, often taking several months to complete each piece.

Traditionally, the fabric is made from processed tree bark that is carefully beaten, treated, and spun into fibers before being woven by hand. The weaving process is further enriched by the use of natural dyes extracted from tree bark, herbs, spices, and other locally sourced plants. As a result, Sekomandi fabric is environmentally friendly, sustainable, and free from synthetic chemicals.

More than just a textile, Sekomandi Weaving represents the cultural identity, traditional knowledge, and craftsmanship of the Kalumpang people. Each woven piece reflects generations of inherited skills and symbolizes the community's commitment to preserving its rich cultural legacy while promoting sustainable and eco-friendly textile production.
