Indigo Makers
Textiles
Jawa Tengah
This business was founded in 2006 under the name Zahir Batik. Its main products are hand-drawn and stamped batik cloth. After 15 years, the business collaborated with farmers to cultivate natural dye plants, namely Indigofera Tinctoria and Strobilantas Cusia. These two plants produce natural dye in the form of indigo paste, which is used to dye batik cloth. In 2021, the business changed its name to Indigo Makers, meaning "Indigo farmers and Indigo paste makers."
All batik products use natural indigo dye (indigo paste) produced by the company itself, ensuring the quality of the dyeing. The resulting indigo paste has become a flagship product sought after by artisans at home and abroad.
The employees consist of 15 indigo farmers and indigo paste producers, and 20 batik workers. Monthly production capacity for hand-drawn and stamped batik cloth is 250-500 pieces, and indigo paste is 900-1,200 kilograms.
Sales of batik cloth and indigo paste are through direct sales at the business premises and participation in national exhibitions in Jakarta and Surabaya, as well as international exhibitions in Japan, Malaysia, and Australia.
The business owner is Zahir Widadi, former head of the Batik Museum in Pekalongan from 2006 to 2011, Dean of the Batik Faculty at Pekalongan University from 2011 to 2019, and recipient of the World Crafts Council Award of Excellence for hand-drawn batik cloth with Tanahan motifs and natural indigo dye in 2018. He is also the author of the book "Javanese Indigo Batik" (2022).
