Batik Rifa'iyah

Textiles Jawa Tengah
Batik Rifaiyah is a traditional batik originating from Kalipucang Wetan Village, Batang Regency, Central Java, deeply rooted in the teachings of 19th-century Islamic scholar Kyai Haji Ahmad Rifai. This heritage batik reflects a unique blend of art, tradition, and spirituality, distinguished from other batik styles by its distinctive characteristics. Following Islamic principles, its motifs avoid depicting living creatures, drawing instead from plants, geometric patterns, and natural elements, and the cloth is traditionally worn wrapped, without pins or cutting.
Handcrafted exclusively by women artisans in a tradition passed down through generations, Batik Rifaiyah was officially recognized in 2025 as one of Indonesia's Intangible Cultural Heritage (Warisan Budaya Tak Benda), a testament to its enduring cultural and historical significance.
